Stories of steel shafts, white balls and ironed collars in a land of blue skies, emerald fairways and sleeves that rarely get long.

The Editorial

Several Greek friends are living abroad, as a result of some career-driven decision.

Regardless of the prestige of their job position or the height of their salary, there’s a common reason for which they steadily complain: the weather. It’s practically impossible for someone who’s been born in this corner of the Earth to compromise with any type of climate in comparison. The UK is rainy, the Middle East is boiling, the winters in northen latitudes seem endless and the subtropical regions are humid and hurricane-prone.

Judging upon this aspect alone, no argumentation should deem necessary as to why Greece constitutes an ideal candidate for a golfing Eden. But more than 50 years flew by since legendary Gene Sarazen's appraisal of Glyfada Golf Course in 1965 (“you have to pinch yourself to believe you’re not in the scenic coast of Santa Barbara, California, I find it hard to believe you can find a better course in continental Europe”) to witness some Greek golf course topping lists with the best in the world. The meantime had been a story of hits and misses such as the beautifully captured skull shot on the left, due to golfing development having rarely been a strategic goal of the central administration. For a country that traditionally invested its biggest expectations on tourism, snubbing such a prime share of the touristic spectrum consisted a paradox to say the least.

On the cool side of the pillow, the obsession of specific private investors in post-2000 years applied the necessary torque to gradually veer the ship around. Currently, through a blend of recently developed courses, major renovation plans on old ones and a number of high-end new developments already underway (two Jack Nicklaus design courses as we type), the vision of at least three generations of greek golfers seems to gradually materialize.

The motive behind this initiative is to guide fellow golfers from abroad, preserve and narrate forgotten chapters of the story of the sport in this land before they vanish forever and -most importantly- aggregate and grow the local golfing community. The editor found the right kind of information through a lovely neighbour to start this magical waltz some 15 years later than he could have. Don’t let this be the case with you. Our learning section will soon provide a detailed roadmap towards your new favorite thing in the world.

Enough said.
The sunrays are attacking the pine and olive tree branches outside and the freshly trimmed bentgrass is flooding our nostrils.
See you on the sunny side of the sport.-
